Eiheiji Temple (永平寺)

Exactly one week after we visted Nata-dera Temple, we piled in our cars once again, this time to visit Eiheiji Temple, which was located in the neighbouring prefecture of Fukui. It was about an hour’s drive, but it was very worth the trip. The temple was absolutely beautiful! Each of the buildings was connected by sheltered hallways as the buddhist monks need to travel between the 70+ buildings many times throughout the day. We also got to experience a buddhist ceremony firsthand – something that is rare even for the locals to catch sight of. The monks filed into the ceremony hall and chanted prayers while we, along with other lucky visitors, watched from outside of the windows and doorways.
