In the same day as the previous post when we went to Kenrokuen again, we walked over to the historic tea and geisha district of Kanazawa city. Although it’s a fairly small area, you’re transported to a different time period as soon as you step foot on the main road. The buildings are meticulously maintained to keep the buildings looking as authentic as possible. While in the district, you can stop for tea ceremonies, try Japanese wagashi sweets, sample and purchase tea, enjoy a geisha performance at night, or browse for beautiful souvenirs. One of the most surprising moments of the day happened as we walked the bridge that crosses the river that runs through the city. We saw a flock of hawks flying in tight circles near the bridge. After stopping with the small crowd forming on the bridge, I realized that the birds were feeding on a swarm of dragonflies that seemed to be clumped in a small cloud. I pointed my lens at one of the hawks, trying to get a few shots of it flying since it was so close. At one point, as it turned back towards the dragonflies and thus towards the bridge, it pointed its beak and started picking up speed… right towards me! I slammed my finger on the shutter and hoped for the best – the best meaning that I would get a shot of the bird without losing an eye! It all happened so fast that my camera wasn’t able to focus in time, but the result was pretty cool nonetheless!
