On the second night that we stayed in Vietnam, we learned that a huge soccer match was happening that night, and the whole country would be watching. Around 7pm, we ventured out to find that the streets were PACKED with people. Any store that had a TV to offer was flooded with fans standing and sitting, eyes fixated on the screen. Even at the small, empty shop we stopped at for dinner, the staff served us our food as fast as they could, then promptly went outside to watch the broadcast across the road. As we were finishing up our dinner, we heard a sudden roar from outside. The match was over, and Vietnam had come out victorious. People immediately flooded into the streets, cheering, blowing horns, and even setting off flares to celebrate. We walked around for a bit, observing all the smiling faces in streets. It was really cool to see a whole city come together to celebrate. The city was going nuts – drivers honked their horns, people shouted, blew whistles, anything they could to make their joy known. And it didn’t stop. Even at about 1AM, the party was still going strong, and we could hear it from our hotel room!
