Synopsis
“Out of the Cold” brings to life the romantic wonder that is presented in romantic fiction through the simulation of what is typically thought of as unpleasant weather. The piece communicates this through still images and an audibly seductive sound space that both work to create a safe space for the viewer to marvel at the seldom-appreciated beauty of weather.
Description
In this piece, five large rustic window panes were hung in front of five 20×30 inch photographs mounted on black foam core. On the glass of the window panes, I used a clear epoxy resin to simulate rain drops running down the window. The frames, as well as the photographs, were hung from a grid. Mounted on the back of each window pane was a battery-powered light that was used to shine a spotlight on each corresponding photograph. The photographs used in the piece were intentionally captured slightly out of focus as to force the viewer to focus on the glass in the window panes. Rather than focus on the photographs themselves, the forced depth of field held the viewer’s gaze in a space between the photos and the sheets of glass. Through this piece, I sought to inspire and elicit the feeling of comfort and safety in the viewer. The photos, window panes, and the sound of rain quietly playing throughout the room created a safe haven for the viewer to enjoy standing or sitting in.
